Mechanism of Action

AICAR is taken up by cells and phosphorylated to ZMP, an AMP analog. ZMP can activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) through allosteric effects and promotion of Thr172 phosphorylation; AICAR may also produce AMPK-independent effects.
